Emily Dickinson

This book design uses water-based media to illustrate the cover and a poem of Emily Dickinson. The illustration alludes to a landscape, a traditional art form, as Emily Dickinson is a traditional part of the English canon. However, the abstract quality allows for interpretation, just as Emily’s abstruse diction and punctuation encourages.

The spread’s illustration matches the cover’s so they work together; however, I painted the landscape in black on the spread. This illustrates the darker theme of the poem, which philosophizes about bleak winter afternoons and ends with the visual of the “look of Death.” I reincorporated the handwritten element from the book title into the poem, connecting the word “Death” to the illustration and thus to the world around us.
